Meelad Dezfooli didn’t let anything stop him from his dream career. While still in grade school, Dezfooli began working at his father’s local flooring store.

Sadly, when the recession hit in the late 2000s, his father had no choice but to close down his stores and retire. Dezfooli, who had believed he would one day take over the family business, was despondent.

“By the time I turned 18, everything was starting to break apart, the market was in ruins, many firms defaulted, and my dream was taken from me,” he remembers.

Forced to switch gears, Dezfooli opened a Persian restaurant. Even though he found some success, he still desperately missed the flooring business. “I realized I loved the industry and the people around me,” he says. “I was nostalgic for the culture, the employees.”



Over the next five years, Dezfooli worked over 12 hours a day, seven days a week, doing anything to save the money needed to start his own flooring company. The endless, grueling hours paid off. By 2015, he was back in the flooring business, founding Best Buy Flooring in Henderson, Nevada. The business has flourished and expanded to multiple locations.

Now that he’s the owner of a highly successful business, Dezfooli shows his gratitude by helping local heroes. He offers generous discounts to veterans, police officers, and other service people.

“After what they’ve done for our country, it’s my honor to give them a better price,” he says. Not one to forget his roots, Dezfooli made a point of hiring several of his father’s former employees, some of whom came from troubled backgrounds.

“He had employees who may have had a small [police] record, but they were some of the best people,” he notes. “My father always taught me to give people a second chance. Several recommendations regarding flooring styles

Where Will the Flooring Be Installed? The type of flooring you choose will be determined in part by where you plan to install it, and over what type of surface. Solid wood flooring, for example, cannot be installed directly over concrete and is a poor choice for humid areas such as basements and baths. Ceramic or porcelain tile requires a stiff, flat surface underneath to prevent cracking. How Will the Floor Be Installed?Different types of flooring are installed in different ways, some of which are DIY-friendly. For example, “floating” floors—typically laminate—consist of interlocking floorboards that use no adhesives; this easy-to-install design is popular with DIYers. But ceramic or porcelain tile is bound to the subfloor with thinset, and the gaps between the tiles are filled with grout. Solid wood flooring is typically nailed down or glued. Installation of either is better left to professionals.

Advances in flooring materials have broadened options at a range of prices. For example, today’s porcelain tile can closely mimic the look and texture of wood, though it’s far more durable. High-end vinyl planks can imitate tropical woods like koa, mango, and teak, or wide, hand-hewn hardwood boards. Sustainable flooring options include linoleum, bamboo, hempwood, cork, and even cement tiles made with carbon recovered from factory emissions. Among solid hardwoods, domestic species like white oak, red oak, walnut, and maple are growing in popularity. “We’re also seeing wider products and longer lengths,” he says. “The average hardwood plank is now 7 to 7½ inches wide.”

I will never stop saying this: Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve is a hidden gem that you definitely shouldn’t miss when in Tulum. The Pacific Coast of Mexico has been a great place for sport fishing and certainly in San Blas you can live a great adventure and find a variety of fish such as Dorado, Sailfish and Marlin, as well as Mojarra, Pargo, Sierra and Snook, depending on the season. Be sure to visit the famous International Tournament Sailfish, Marlin and Dorado which is held every year during the months of May and June.

You aren’t allowed to leave the boat and walk on Monkey Island, but the guides on the boat use special calls to get the monkeys’ attention. We saw 3 monkey species on our trip as well as a crocodile! I really enjoyed the tour and seeing so many monkeys was a great experience. Although we didn’t feed the monkeys, other people on our boat did and I wasn’t sure how I felt about that. The monkeys here are supposed to be wild and I wasn’t aware before that tour groups feed them. This is one of those wildlife experiences that borders the line of being unethical. Yes, the island is protected and the monkeys are only fed bananas, but you’ll have to decide for yourself if this is the tour for you! We decided to take a tour to Monkey Island for $70 USD. One of Panama’s top surf destinations is Santa Catalina, on the Pacific Coast. This small but growing town has a laid-back surfer feeling about it. Small guesthouses and hotels, and funky restaurants, force you to slow down and relax. If you aren’t here to surf, great snorkeling and scuba diving spots are nearby, and horseback tours through the surrounding countryside are good options for those not interested in getting wet. One of Santa Catalina’s main draws is Isla Coiba. This lush island, now Coiba National Park, is almost untouched and is considered a biodiversity hot spot, with close to 200 bird species, crocodiles, turtles, and snakes. The scuba diving here is very popular due to the enormous whale sharks that frequent the area. These gentle giants are curious creatures and enjoy interacting with divers. Tours to Isla Coiba can be arranged in Santa Catalina. One of the most fun things to do near Boquete is visiting the local swimming hole at Los Cangilones. Set at a lower elevation than Boquete, the climate here is much warmer, and on hot days you’ll find a fun scene, complete with music, barbecues, food vendors, and Panamanians from far and wide splashing and jumping off the gorge edges into the crystal-clear, warm waters below. In this unique geological place, the river narrows into a gorge before opening up again in a shallow pool at the bottom. Daring adults and older kids jump off the edges into the slowly moving waters and then float down to the bottom, climb out, and do it all over again. Youngsters and visitors who are looking for something a little milder can wade into the shallow waters where the gorge opens up. The walls vary in height, so it depends on how brave you are and how high you want to go. This is very much a family destination.
